As of January 2015, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has a new electronic system called Express Entry to manage applications for permanent residence under certain economic immigration programs.
The Express Entry system is the first step to immigrate to Canada under these programs. Potential candidates can complete an Express Entry profile at any time. Note that there is no deadline to complete a profile and there are no caps on the number of candidates that will be accepted to the pool.
It will make it easier for suitable qualified immigrants to move to Canada. The Express Entry option will be available to applicants who are qualified to work in skilled jobs where there is currently a shortage of Canadian labour. Candidates who are accepted under the Express Entry scheme can expect their application to be processed faster.
Express Entry is not an immigration program in itself, but rather a system used by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) to select candidates for immigration to Canada using the following economic immigration programs:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program
- Federal Skilled Trades Program
- Canadian Experience Class
Provinces and territories can also recruit candidates from the Express Entry system through their Provincial Nominee Programs to meet local labour market needs.
Who Can Apply for the Express Entry Option?
One of the nice things about the Express Entry scheme is it is technically open to anyone looking to come to work in Canada. Those who have qualifications, skills, and experience are the most likely to benefit – especially if these credentials are in occupations where there is currently a shortage of workers in Canada.
